Choosing a Finish for Your Hardwood Floor
Hardwood flooring can be stained to match almost any color which can give the look of an exotic wood without the expense of replacing the wood.
Most hardwood flooring is finished with oil-based polyurethane. Oil-based is the choice for most homeowners because it has proven durability, brings out the rich color of the grains in hardwood flooring and has the shine that many people want.
Water-based polyurethane is becoming a very popular product and provides more of a matte finish than oil-based polyurethane, but water-based does not become golden over time. Water-based polyurethane does not provide the same durability that oil-based provides, but it dries in only a few hours and does not release an odor while drying.
Tung oil is a finish that is applied just like water-based or oil-based polyurethane, but unlike these finishes, Tung oil will need to be reapplied about once every year. If scratches occur in the Tung oil finish, they can be quickly rubbed away by applying a coat of oil to the damaged area. This cannot be done with polyurethane.
